Kick it With Kenya

Africans are known for a lot of things, many good things, and perhaps even more bad. For those living outside of Africa, the mention of African children inspires thoughts of poverty and disease; neediness. When University of Oregon Senior, Michele Fujii visited western Kenya in the summer of 2007, she saw that and much more. Through Village Volunteers, a Seattle-based NGO, Michele traveled to Kenya with the aim of gaining experience in the medical field.

She did everything from examining malaria parasites under a microscope to political campaigning for an aspiring member of parliament. But more than the experience she gained, what Michele remembers most are the people of Kenya: their joy despite their pain, their contentment despite adversity and their faith despite the seemingly hopeless conditions. It was clear to her that a lack of education about the issues affecting them was the root perpetrator of the poor health experienced by Kenyans. Like most people in the world, Michele wanted to do something to help but unlike most, she was determined to see it done.

Dr. Wambulwa is a native of Kitale, Kenya. As a young man he gave himself to educating the youth of Nairobi and Mt. Elgon in subjects of biology, chemistry and social studies and in social norms by coaching sports teams. He was privileged to obtain a B.S. degree in Biology from Bethune Cookman University in Florida and subsequently received an MD from Howard University in Washington DC.
